BYDMate: Free Trip, Charging & Battery App for BYD – Plain-English Guide

Quick answer: BYDMate is a free app for your BYD's centre screen (DiLink). It reads energy use straight from the battery management system, so you see what your car really uses per 100 km, and it logs every trip and charge with cost, tracks battery health, reads fault codes and adds automations, split screen and maps on the driver display. The app has a full English interface. A few extras (the voice assistant and windscreen navigation prompts) are built for Russia and won't be much use in the UK, Europe or Australia. Install takes 20–60 minutes, depending on your car's software.

A few terms you'll see: DiLink is BYD's centre-screen software. APK (Android Package) is an Android app install file. ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is a developer setting that lets an app read and control the car. BMS (battery management system) is the computer that watches the high-voltage battery. SoH (State of Health) is how much of its original capacity the battery still has.

What can BYDMate do?

1. Show your real energy use

The developer says BYD's built-in trip computer shows 10–30% less energy use than the car really uses. BYDMate reads the figure from the BMS instead, and shows a rolling average over the last 25 km, colour-coded green, yellow or red. It also shows what the standard screens don't: energy lost while parked, and how evenly the battery cells are balanced.

2. Log every trip and what it cost

Each drive is saved with its GPS route, distance, speed, energy used and cost. Enter your home (AC) and fast-charging (DC) electricity prices, in your own currency, and BYDMate works out what each trip cost. It also gives you two trip counters (TRIP 1 and TRIP 2) that can reset after each charge.

3. Log every charge automatically

Home and fast-charging sessions are recorded by themselves, with energy added, average power, battery temperature and start and end charge levels. You can add or edit sessions by hand and see totals for any period.

4. Check battery health and the 12V battery

See battery health (SoH), battery temperatures, the gap between the strongest and weakest cell, insulation readings and 12V battery voltage. A "Car status" card shows climate, and tyre pressure and temperature on a picture of the car.

5. Read fault codes without a garage scanner

On the Tech screen, press Scan (in Park only) and BYDMate reads fault codes from the car's control modules, grouped by module, with a description next to each. It only reads; it doesn't change anything in the car. It also shows warning lights and the time left until the next service.

6. Automations: "when this happens, do that"

Build rules with 17 types of action, such as turning on seat heating when it's cold, switching on BYD's Sentry Mode when you park, or showing a reminder. There are built-in safety limits: windows won't open above 120 km/h, the sunroof above 80 km/h, and doors won't unlock above 30 km/h.

7. Split screen, driver-display maps and blind-spot cameras

Split the centre screen into 1/3 and 2/3 panels. Send a navigation or media app to the instrument cluster (the display behind the steering wheel) with a steering-wheel button. Show the side camera on screen when you use the indicator.

8. Floating widget, backups and route planning

A small floating widget shows up to seven live readings (charge, range, temperatures and more) on top of other apps. Your data can be backed up on a schedule, and sent to you on Telegram. It can also send live data to ABRP (A Better Routeplanner), the popular EV route-planning app, for more accurate charging stops.

What won't help much outside Russia

  • Voice assistant: the speech recognition only understands Russian.
  • Windscreen (HUD) turn prompts: built around Yandex Navigator, which few drivers use in the UK, Europe or Australia. Sending other apps such as Google Maps to the driver display still works.
  • Donations are through Russian payment services and USDT (a cryptocurrency).

Is the English version complete?

Yes, almost entirely. We checked the app's English text files (version 4.1.0): more than 2,000 interface lines are translated, and the few left in other languages are on purpose (for example the trip counter names and Russian payment brand names). The only Russian you may notice in normal use is the kWh unit on the charging list (shown as "кВт·ч") and a few error messages when the app checks for updates. The English guide on GitHub is a full translation of the original Russian guide.

Before you start: read this

  • It's unofficial software, not made or approved by BYD. Ask your BYD dealer how it could affect your warranty, and install it at your own risk.
  • DiLink 5 owners: the developer says ADB is locked on DiLink 5 and can only be unlocked remotely by sellers in China (through the Taobao marketplace, about CNY 80 / US$11 from outside China). Without ADB, BYDMate still works as a basic trip logger.
  • BYD software updates from summer 2026 switch ADB off at every restart. BYDMate has a setting that turns it back on by itself (see step 5).
  • Never set it up while driving. Park somewhere safe with the car switched on.

How to install BYDMate on your BYD, step by step

These steps follow the developer's English guide. If something looks different on your car, check the English guide.

Step 1: Check your DiLink version

On the car go to Settings → About (or System) and check the DiLink version. DiLink 3 and 4 follow step 2A; DiLink 5 follows step 2B.

Step 2A: Switch on ADB (DiLink 3 and 4)

  1. Install the BydDevelopmentTools app (download link in the developer's guide) from a USB stick, the same way as in step 3.
  2. Open the car's Settings → Version Management and tap Reset to factory default 10 times in a row. This opens a hidden developer menu; it does not reset the car.
  3. Switch on Debug Mode when USB is Connected and Wireless adb debug switch.

Tip: if these switches are missing, your software has been updated and ADB is locked like on DiLink 5.

Step 2B: Switch on ADB (DiLink 5)

Search the Taobao marketplace for "DiLink 5.0" and pick a seller who offers remote unlocking. They open the engineering menu remotely using a QR code you send them from the car, then you switch on ADB as in step 2A. The developer has a picture guide (in Russian) on the GitHub page.

Step 3: Install the app

  1. On a computer, download the latest BYDMate APK from the official releases page (under "Assets"). Only download it from there.
  2. Copy the file onto a USB stick and plug it into the car.
  3. Open the file from the car's file manager and tap Install. If asked, allow installing from unknown sources.

Step 4: First launch

  1. Open BYDMate. The setup wizard starts. Choose English.
  2. When the car asks "Allow ADB debugging?", tick Always allow from this computer and tap Allow.
  3. Allow location and storage. The app asks for more (microphone, camera, drawing over other apps) only when you switch on a feature that needs it.
  4. In the wizard's ADB step, tap Check to make sure it's working.
  5. Enter your electricity prices for home and fast charging, and your currency.
  6. In Settings, set your car's battery capacity in kWh. The default (72.9 kWh) is for the Leopard 3, so change it to match your car.

Step 5: Keep it running

  1. On the car go to Settings → General → Disable background Apps and switch it off for BYDMate. Otherwise the car closes the app.
  2. If ADB stops working after every restart, open BYDMate's Settings → Car System and turn on Restore ADB after a reboot. This needs the car connected to Wi-Fi (home Wi-Fi or your phone's hotspot). ADB usually comes back 10–30 seconds after the car connects.

Troubleshooting

  • Live readings, automations or split screen don't work: look at the ADB status line on the home screen. Tap it to see why and what to do.
  • The app stops in the background: check "Disable background Apps" is off for BYDMate.
  • The map on the driver display is cut off (Sealion 7 and similar cars show it in a small zone): in Settings → Display → Cluster window size, the developer suggests width 32%, height 92%, horizontal offset 100%, vertical offset 6% and scale 90%.
  • Energy figures look wrong: check the battery capacity in Settings matches your car.
  • Still stuck: report it on the GitHub issues page. Writing in English is fine.

Frequently asked questions

Is BYDMate free?

Yes. BYDMate is free under the PolyForm Noncommercial licence, which means anyone can use it for personal use. Donations to the developer are optional.

Does BYDMate work in English?

Yes. Choose English in the first-run wizard or later in Settings. Nearly all of the interface is translated; only the voice assistant is Russian-only.

Which BYD models does BYDMate work on?

BYD cars with DiLink 3, 4, 5 or 5.1, or the UI7 software. The developer tested it on the Leopard 3 and lists the Seal, Atto 3, Sealion 7, Song (Seal U / Sealion 6), Han and DM-i plug-in hybrids. Some features, like the driver-display maps and blind-spot cameras, depend on your exact model and software.

Is BYD's built-in energy reading really wrong?

The developer says the built-in trip computer shows 10–30% less than the car really uses, because it doesn't count everything the battery delivers. BYDMate uses the battery's own data. If you want to check for yourself, compare the energy added at a charger with the distance driven since.

Do I need the internet?

No. Trips, charging, battery data, automations and diagnostics all work offline and stay in the car. Online extras like the AI insights, weather and ABRP stay off until you add your own key.

Will it change my car's settings?

Most features don't touch the car's system settings. The "Extended" driver-display mode changes one system setting, and the app explains this before you switch it on. Switching back to "Factory" mode and restarting puts the car back as it was.

Can I use BYDMate and OverDrive together?

They do different jobs: OverDrive is a dashcam and Sentry Mode app, BYDMate is about energy, trips, charging and battery health. We haven't tested them side by side, so if you try both, keep an eye on whether the screen slows down.

Will installing BYDMate void my warranty?

We can't say for sure, and it may depend on your country and dealer. It's not made or approved by BYD, and it needs developer settings switched on. Ask your dealer before installing.

Our take

If you've ever wondered why your real-world range doesn't match the dashboard, BYDMate is the app to try. The energy, charging and battery-health tools are the best we've seen for BYD, and they work fully in English. Skip the voice assistant unless you speak Russian, and if you have DiLink 5, factor in the remote unlock. Tried it? Tell us how it went on your model at support@funbyd.com.
